The Winter Garden by Alexandra Bell

“They say gardens are good for the soul, and the magical Winter Garden most of all. You’ll never find it in one place for long. It goes where it is needed, appearing from nothing and vanishing just as quickly.” The garden is a place of wonder and magic in a world that often has so little of both.

There were three tame mice, a rabbit and a hedgehog with an injured foot – the only friends Beatrice had in the world, except for James and Rosa. When Beatrice’s mother dies, the mysterious Winter Garden becomes her solace for seven day. Then, it disappears without a trace.

But, eighteen years later, Beatrice decides to search for the garden that she has never forgotten. James and Rosa will help her to find out that inner world of hers, through which she can help others. Her mother’s wish brought this place to life: “I wish I coud have left you with a special place that you could go to watch the fairies dance, and talk with the Spider Queen, and taste magic, and be truly yourself.”

It was hard, because life needs dark leaves in the wreath, as the Spider Queen and her mother said. There cannot be true joy without sorrow, or real happiness without loss. And we just have to live with some things and some mistakes, because there’s no shortcut or magical solution that will undo them. There is no way to live a perfect life free from suffering, but there are a hundred different ways to be happy.

It’s important to share a little of the garden’s magic with those who need it most in the world.
